But, was it always the case? The ancient Romans used an inferior form of cement. Well, not ‘inferior’ so to speak, as it was the best cement for construction they could use back in the day. This was made using lime (calcium oxide) with volcanic ash (pozzolana) and water. The result? The mixture would aggregate like stone or rubble. 

However, by modern standards, this Roman concrete is considered inferior in compressive strength and inconsistent in quality compared to today’s Portland cement and reinforced concrete systems (RCC or Reinforced Concrete Systems have steel bars (rebars), mesh, or fibres embedded inside them.) It also lacked tensile strength, which is where steel reinforcement later transformed the game.

 

 

It wasn’t until the 19th century, when steel reinforcements for construction were embedded in cement, that construction took a revolutionary leap. François Coignet and Joseph Monier pioneered what became reinforced concrete, setting the stage for bridges, skyscrapers, and dams to rise like never before.
